"Clans" (クラン Kuran) are the factions of Cardfight!! Vanguard. Within the card game, they are the primary determinants of the structure of a deck. Clans are defined by their different themes and focuses; for example, Royal Paladin is a clan composed of holy knights focused on calling allies, while Kagero is a clan composed of fiery dragons and dragon knights focused on retiring the opponent's rear-guards. All cards have an original clan, listed in the bottom-right corner of the card above its race. Additionally, all clans are associated with a nation, one of the six countries or continents of Planet Cray, the setting of the Cardfight!! Vanguard universe.

"Clans" (クラン Kuran) are the factions in Cardfight!! Vanguard, and which each card belongs to one. Likewise, each clan also belongs to a nation. In card text, the name of a clan is mentioned within "《》" in the Japanese version, and within "«»" in the English version.

In the main mode of Vanguard play, Clan Fight, decks can only be composed of cards from one clan, with some exceptions. Originally, cards were allowed to be used in decks regardless of clans, although many cards had restrictions that heavily discouraged using them with cards from different clans (such as Lord), and mixing clans was infrequent and largely discouraged. For various reasons, the Clan Fight regulation was eventually implemented in March 2014, rendering restrictions like Lord unnecessary, and while the Extreme Fight regulation was implemented to allow multi-clan decks, it is rarely played in practice.
Clans have some Unique Races and Shared Races in them. Unique Races found in most of the clans sometimes make up their main theme to represent themselves with their unique traits. For example, Megacolony is based exclusively on Insects.

To activate a trigger effect, the player must have at least one vanguard or rear-guard on the field with the same clan as that trigger unit. However, due to Vanguard being primarily played with the aforementioned regulation, this restriction is largely irrelevant.
These themes may be used to form a deck, and they are usually themed around a certain ability or trait, such as preventing your opponent's units from Standing, Locking your opponent's units, calling units from the drop zone, drawing cards, etc.

Originally, most cards had restrictions that prevent players from adding cards from other clans (such as Lord or requiring a vanguard from the same clan to use their effects) to discourage clan mixing, however, mixing clans was allowed and wasn't necessarily a bad idea in some cases (Such as Overlord/Tri-stinger in Aqua Force decks, or Stil Vampir/Silent Tom in Oracle Think Tank decks). As the introduction of Clan Fight regulation in February 2014 (paralleling the airing of Season 4) essentially outlaws decks with two or more clan (except for some exceptional cases), such restrictions in later cards were removed as they are no longer necessary.

Originally, most clans (outside of "main" ones like Kagerō and Shadow Paladin) only had 4 cards (from grade 0 to 3) and no trigger units in the set they were introduced.

In Cardfight!! Vanguard G, top-level fighters (like Mamoru Anjou) are honored with the title of "Clan Leader".

Etranger also belongs to Star Gate for classification purposes. However, it was created for the sole purpose of cameo cards. As Etranger does not have their own trigger units to build a single clan deck, it essentially makes all but one (due to Dual Clanning) illegal in clan fight regulations.

To activate a trigger effect, the player must have at least one vanguard or rear-guard on the field with the same clan as that trigger unit. However, due to Vanguard being primarily played with the aforementioned regulation, this restriction is largely irrelevant.
