Cardfight!! Vanguard Wiki

It's kind of late, given how long ago Neon Gyze was revealed, but I wanted to at least wait until G set 14 was fully up and running.

Anyways, "Commander" is an unofficial fan term I am giving to a card that operates like Gyze. It's very much taken from the Magic: The Gathering format of the same name that uses a similar mechanic. It just fits really well here, in my opinion. I also didn't want to spend too much thought on this lol.

Specifically, in terms of CFV, a Commander has the following traits:

  • Is a grade 0
  • Goes to g zone face-up when ridden on
  • has an ability when face-up in the g zone

If it helps, one can think of them as similar in nature to Rulers from Force of Will or Leaders from Dragon Ball Super Card Game. Or well, quite a few other games that I am sure exist, but these are the big ones. Note that I did not say it had to be double-sided. FoW doesn't always do that for Rulers and it is treated as a way to balance the powerful continuous effects the front side has. These cards have great potential for this game and could even be the next big mechanic.

Here is an example of what I see a Commander being and doing for a deck:

Idealistic Sword Prodigy, Ahmes

Royal Paladin

Grade 0/ 5000

Normal unit/ Boost

10000 shield

[Commander]-(When this unit is ridden on, put this card into your g zone. It does not count towards Generation Break.)

[AUTO](G Zone) [Discard a card from your hand]: AT the start of your ride phase, you may pay the cost. If you do, ride a card with "Blaster Blade" in its card name from your deck that is one grade higher than your Vanguard. Shuffle your deck. You cannot normal ride the turn this ability was used.

[CONT](G zone): You can only ride units with "Blaster" in their card names.

[CONT](G Zone): All units named "Blaster Blade" gain +2000 power and have the costs of their abilities reduced by CB1.

[Command Stride]-"Eternal Swordsman of Light, Blaster Blade Saver" (Released when there are 2 or more units with "Saver" in their card names face-up in your g zone!)-Stride Step-[Discard cards from hand whose total grade sums equal to 3 or more] Flip this card over and stride it on your (VC).

Eternal Swordsman of Light, Blaster Blade Saver

Royal Paladin

Grade 4/ 15000+

G unit/ Triple Drive!!

[Command Stride]-(This returns to your g zone this side up at the end of the turn. The abilities of the other side of this card no longer apply. This counts towards Generation Break.)

[CONT] All rear-guards with "Blaster Blade" in their card names in the front row gain +7000/+1 critical.

[CONT] All units with "Blaster Blade" in their card names in the front row gain +1 drive during their first battle in the turn.

As you can see, this gives a good boost to a classic deck. My thoughts were mostly on getting people to stop using Wingal Brave and for the other side to be a basic finisher card that won't cause a loss if it doesn't get a win. Also, limit usage in other kinds of decks, such as Altmile. If anyone wants to pick this apart, go ahead.

Other variations for this sort of thing include (with handy keywords I pulled out of thin air):

  • [Eternal Stride]-Stays on VC. Basically, Gyze. Can have a lower power level, if one wants to do that for the sake of balance. This would, in theory, fully replace the Vanguard and there wouldn't even be a heart anymore.
  • [Immortal Stride]-Goes back to g zone flipped back to the g0 side. How this would work is that one would only lose the Commander abilities when actively striding the card. Also, one can keep using the same copy over and over again if one wishes to. Obviously, this sort of thing would need balance.
  • No stride at all-I mentioned this earlier, but it would be improper (in my opinion) not to repeat it here. One can decide that it's better for the deck for more powerful continuous abilities be applied over access to a boss card. In FoW, this usually gets applied to rush decks or decks that are just so bizarre that they need this sort of effect in place at all times to even function (like the deck that has one milling cards instead of taking damage in that game).

Feel free to come up with stuff on your own for decks that already exist or ones you came up with! Don't worry too much about balance as I am sure the wiki will tell you if it is or not and it isn't like these cards would get made IRL, anyways! There's also a great CFV Fanon wiki (that I admittedly hardly visit, but ah well), so feel free to post your ides there, too! Though, I did make this blog to see what all people could come up with, as I truly feel this idea has immense potential for the game. And for those who still prefer their forerunners for a number of various reasons, continue to do so! More variety is great for a game! Synchro with Fusion!

And remember to have fun, guys!
